I noticed Real Urban Barbecue opened up in Oak Brook recently and have been wanting to check it out. I researched online and saw they had gluten free options so we decided to give it a try last weekend. When we arrived it was very busy which made me nervous since often when a place is very busy some attention to detail of special diet needs can be lost. But I was prepared, and when I got to the front of the line I explained that I had celiac disease and couldn’t have gluten. I asked if he could change his gloves and he glady oblidged and then made sure to tell me what sauce was gluten free and that all the meat was gluten free. I was very impressed with his knowledge and willingness to accomodate me. If there was one area of improvement I would suggest that when they pass the plate down to the ‘sides’ area that they let the person running that station know about the need for gluten free. I had already done my research and knew which sides I could eat, but if I hadn’t the sides are a minefield of gluten that some direction from the staff would be helpful. That being said I would hope most people who need to eat GF are doing their research ahead of time anyway!
I had the pulled pork with the original sauce (I was told it was the only sauce that is Gluten Free) and had the baked beans and mashed potatoes for sides. The pork was very flavorful and juicy but I actually think the baked beans were my favorite. There were several difrerent kinds of beans and bacon!
