OK – this review is a long one… bear with me.
A while ago, my sister-in-law Natalie sent me an invite to try Hello Fresh for a free one week trial so I decided to give it a shot. Hello Fresh is service that will bring you all the ingredients and a recipe for 3 meals a week. All you have to do is prepare it! We chose the vegitarian meals because I liked the options that week.
There is no way to request gluten free meals, but there website says “While we don’t offer specific dietary plans, because our ingredients are delivered to you in separate packets, if you have any specific dislikes you can simply omit or replace these ingredients from a recipe.” They do list the potential allergens under each meal before you choose. However it only lists Wheat and not gluten.
Overall I liked the meals we got and there was very little substitution needed to make gluten free. However that is not the case with every week. It seams that at least one meal you get will have gluten and some are a lot easier to make substitutions than others. It isn’t something I could use all the time due to the substitutions needed, but it was fun to try and I’ll probably keep an eye on the recipes and try another week of meals. You can see the meals I received below
Here is how My Meals came packaged. Seperated out by meal.
Sweet Potato & Quinoa Bowl
It was very easy to make but was not ingredients I had thought to put together before. It was very filling and satisfying. This was my favorite recipe from the box.
Asparagus and Pea Risotto
I love risotto and make it often so this was an easy dish for me to make and basically didn’t need any cooking directions. I was excited to try the asparagus, pea, walnut, goat cheese, and mint flavors since this was a mix that was different than my formal repertoire. I did use my own broth even though it was not indicated as a potential allergen, just to be safe.
Florentine Stuffed Portobellos
This is the only recipe that indicated wheat as an allergen on the recipe card. Panko was identified as having wheat which is nice that they indicate which ingredients have any alergens. I wasn’t sure about the veggie stock since they don’t list gluten as an alergen I decided to omit it to be safe and used my own Gluten Free panko. All other ingredients were gluten free. There were several steps but it came together pretty quickly and easily. We don’t eat a lot of portobellos so it was a nice change of pace as a side. It was creamy and rich but Bill said it could use a little something else. When I mentioned artichokes, he agreed. Probably because the topping is essentially spinach artichoke dip without the artichokes! We actually had this as a side to some pork chops so I omitted the rice. But that is what is great about this, you can omit whatever you want or add anything to it or on the side.
